Women looking to start a recruitment agency will be glad to hear that gender imbalances in the decision making bodies of private companies are set to be addressed by European authorities.

According to the City Women's Network (CWN), the European Commission is considering introducing quotas to tackle the issue in the private sector, where women only make up ten per cent of members.

The new ruling on transparency is due to come into effect with the Equality Act in October and the changes have been welcomed by Kate Grussing, spokesperson for CWN and managing director of recruitment firm Sapphire Partners.

However, she stated that quotas are "a very contentious debate" because "no woman wants to go and sit on a board because she satisfies a quota requirement".

"Our members are divided on quotas, and what we need to focus on is greater transparency of how the board appointments are made so that women are on the shortlist where they deserve to be," she added.
