I would like to hear from people all around the world and get to know what you believe will be the number one motivator for a job change in 2013. Economic conditions are different in every country and inquiring minds would like to know the differences.  There is not a better platform to discuss this than RBC.  What are you hearing, and why are people listening to recruiters for a job change?  Is it the same in America as in the UK, Australia, India or other countries?

I think in the US people will change jobs for different reasons depending on your generation.  Gen Y folks & technology individuals will continue to search for jobs where they can add skills to their skill set.  I think most others will look for stability.  With so much economic uncertainty, people will want to feel secure and try to find a home that gives them that.

For the most part I think that people will changes jobs for the same reason as they have in the past, opportunity to grow, a chance for faster growth, even for more money (though it is not as big a factor). Having said that, I hear so many more people say "looking for a more secure position". With all of the company disruptions because of the economy, I hear more people telling me they want a more stable situation

As far as generational changes in what initiates a job search, I hear more people in the 20-30 range looking for better work life balance, a chance to work remote and better benefits.  They seem to still be interested in growth but not at the sacrifice of everything else.

Many people are not looking to change jobs at all, they believe that they area safer where they are! If they work for someone that rates them why would they move on? It may not be legal but many people still believe that 'last in first out' is operating today.

It is still tough out there unless you are in a few specific niches.

We are in the process of doing a small scale study on this topic.  There are 3 major categories and many options within each category as to why people change jobs.  They fall into Organizational, Job Specific or Personal reasons according to our calculations.  Here is the list.

ORGANIZATIONAL REASONS:

  1. Too face paced
  2. Too slow paced
  3. Desired larger organization
  4. Desired smaller organization
  5. Organization ownership/finances not stable
  6. Organization direction/strategy concerning
  7. Training/Development insufficient

JOB SPECIFIC REASONS:

  1. Too much travel
  2. Too many hours
  3. Unsatisfactory relationship with boss and management
  4. Unsatisfactory relationship with team/co-workers
  5. Unsatisfactory compensation
  6. Unsatisfactory career progression
  7. Job stability unsatisfactory

PERSONAL REASONS

  1. Too long of a commute
  2. Desired a new living location
  3. Desired more compensation
  4. Desired better benefits
  5. Seeking recognition/respect/visibility
  6. Seeking growth/challenge/change
  7. Fired
  8. Reduction in force/lay off

Dave, thanks!  are those listed in order?  and of the three catagories, which one generated the most response.  BTW see you in a week!

Danny, we are in process.  The results are not in but we spent about 2 months refining the list...sorry about the typos...no particular order.  You are right that Organization number 5 is getting more ticks than perhaps 3 years agao when people just wanted to be employed.  Now people want financially healthy employers.
