Hi Melanie,
Some time ago I listened to a podcast on the subject of leaving effective voicemails.
Although not specifically dealing with clients, it may interest you

I'm assuming you mean potential client. How about less is more? There's nothing worse than a salesperson trying to sell via voice mail. A "powerful" voice mail as you put it, should be straightforward, concise and come across with a high degree of confidence. I get plenty of voice mails from salesman who sound defeated and are just going through the motions.

Putting a little effort into preparing for the call is a great way to make you stand out from the crowd. Conduct a little research about the person your calling and find a way to personalize the message. The key again is to give them a reason to call you back. But there is a fine line here...providing too much detail allows the person to qualify the call based on the information you've provided. Unless your timing is absolutely perfect (and it rarely is), your message will probably be deleted and forgotten.
Google the name "Art Sobczak"..he has some excellent teachings on voicemails and selling on the phone.

Personally I have better luck with voicemails when I just hit a couple of high notes about a candidate I have that they might like...Note that it takes some pre call research to improve the odds of it working, I don't just smile and dial....If it's about something that helps them, they'll care..if it's about me and what a great recruiter I am - "delete"..nobody cares, unless it means something to the listener.

Good points everyone! I've found that doing some research and scripting out what you want to say does help. Of course you want your offer to be so compelling that they want to return your call. I totally agree with Bill Ward that you need to personalize it as much as possible to stand out from the herd.
