"Stochastic" is a word that comes from the Ancient Greek meaning 'target'.  The idea embodied within the etymology is that given a sufficient amount of time and effort, even purely chance operations would allow one to 'hit' a target.  Perhaps I oversimplify, and it would be better to look at the issue conversely, such that if I aim at a target, I will "probably" be likely to hit it.

The music of Iannis Xenakis was based largely on statistics (i.e. probability), and the ancient tradition of sending messages via drums is important to remember.  Xenakis was a Chemical Engineer/Architect/Mathematician/Composer -- one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

His work "Rebonds" focuses on irregular (stochastic) rhythms which highly resemble the behavior of individual bubbles of solutions boiling up through 'separation trays' (column distillation).
