Young recruiters are given a phone and a database and told to make 100 calls a day. In the end the recruiter knows nothing about social networking or for that matter the recruiting world in general. It seems that many recruiters that participate in the recruiting community are GenXers while recruiters in the 21-30 age category seem to be missing.

What are your thoughts?

Recruiting like everything, takes time to learn. There are some things that just need to be done. Getting on the phone is one of them. Talking to people "networking" with them is another. You have to learn your style, you have to learn your industry, talking to people, physically talking to people does that. People just entering this world of work can be overwhelmed by role descriptions they have never heard of, let them talk to people, ask the dumb questions and learn.

It's interesting because I've heard people saying that Gen Yers are naturals at this whole social networking thing, so why train them on it? Aren't they already all over Facebook.com, Twitter etc?

I think there are a couple of questions here, and one is at the heart of one of my biggest bug bears about the industry. The old telemarketer call... the second is the question of involvement of the generation in the Recruiting communities.

a) Recruiting = Telemarketing. Hey i have them all call me, people obviously working off a script, (and amusingly struggling to talk when we venture off the script :) ) I've had HR "professionals" structure an "interview guide" to resemble a script for me, and try to tell me I had to ask every question, in order no matter what, I've had bosses tell me I wasted time physically interviewing people when I can get the same stuff off the phone. In all cases people with those ideas have either left or been left from my focus. Unfortunately some people see this as the norm. As Recruiters it is our responsibility to educate these people, and prove the value add we have. This includes educating new recruiters, and giving them time to learn their own style.

b) Contributors. I'm sure they come from all types, I haven't done the stats, but as with everything need more. I'm sure it isn't generational, although I would hate to put more pressure on people learning their trade to have to contribute to this. As stated in earlier discussions, it can be daunting for some people. Maybe by the time you're a GenX like me, you just know everyone wants to hear what you have to say

Welcome to the world of Recruiting. Just since you are on RBC is awesome since you can learn so much from so many experts who frequent these boards.

The bone I pick is with managers who rob their recruiters of even a hint that mindless cold calling is not all there is to recruiting. Some people figure it out on their own; many more never do.

Most Recruiters are doing telemarketing work or i would say of delivery boy services not recruitment,the task of sourcing ,following the pipeline networks ,posting,evaluating consultants.Even some of my colleagues do the telemarketing/delivery boy services.AS usual they reply "need to submit resumes" ASAP.

I feel the time to change the process or we are doomed

I don't think we are doomed, I just think that many recruiters will see recruiting as just another 9-5 job instead of a career or an opportunity to change people's lives.
