I just got off the phone with a business manager who politely but firmly told me they had used a recruiter and was burned - badly! She said once was enough and they would not even consider it.

How would ya'll deal with this kind of scenario? I have a candidate that appears to be a good fit for the position and I hate to just walk away.........

I think finding out what the recruiter did to 'burn' them, and then taking the necessary steps to assure the client you operate differently (if you indeed do). If that doesn't work, and you work on a contingent basis, you could always play off the 'nothing to lose and everything to gain' line.
Sandra,
As radical as that solution may sound to some it is occasionally the only thing that works on a closed mind. I have done it as well.

To state the obvious - make sure it's worth it. The account has to have the potential to be a large, long-term one that will pay for your "free" offer ten times over.
Xactly!
Thanks to all of you who shared! I appreciate the "new view" of this and moving forward.
