Some 35,000 temporary roles are expected to be created to deal with the 2011 census, which may interest those intending to set up a recruitment agency.

Both full-time and part-time workers will be recruited to take up roles from managing local teams to those who will visit homes to help with its completion.

Workers will be allocated across the country based on the population density in the various regions.

However, spiralling costs mean the 2011 census could be the last of its kind.

With an expected cost of £480 million next year, the cabinet minister Francis Maude is intending to scrap the 2021 census, according to the Guardian.

Census director for the Office for National Statistics Glen Watson comments: "The census is not just about counting people, the information it provides is needed to plan vital services like schools, hospitals, housing, roads and emergency services."

Recent figures published by de Poel show that the number of hours worked by temporary workers has risen by 19 per cent since August last year.
