Does Industry Play a Factor in Compensation?

Are jobs compensated differently based on industry? For example, would a Help Desk position pay a higher salary in the Finance industry versus Manufacturing? Would jobs with an Oil & Gas company pay more than the same jobs in the Telecommunications industry?
