Q & A with Kathy Gillen, SPHR
Kathy Gillen is a Staffing Professional based in Glendora, California. Her staffing areas of expertise are in recruiting technology and full cycle recruiting in a corporate environment.
Six Degrees: Tell us of your home world.
Kathy: My husband John and I have been married for over 15 years. We have a son, John Jr., 13 and a daughter, Riley, 9. We live in Glendora, California, a small city in Los Angeles County at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. We have a busy life with our careers and our kids. When we aren’t shuttling them around to different events, we enjoy traveling. My husband and I have been to some very exciting places including Egypt, Tokyo, Greece, and France.
I was born in Puerto Rico and have lived in about 9 different states including Canada (my dad was a VP of Sales for large corporations so he was transferred and promoted often). I enjoy living in southern California and having the flexibility to kayak in the ocean and ski in the mountains all within driving distance! I like meeting new people and learning new things. I am a continual student, always enrolled in at least one class – I am currently learning the ‘art of upholstery’!
Six Degrees: How many years have you been in the staffing industry?
Kathy: When I graduated from college, I started my career in sales but have been in recruiting for the last 10 years. My recruiting career has been within large corporate environments. I started with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and for the last 3 ½ years I’ve been with ADP, recruiting for our executive sales team.
I’ve worked with a variety of different Applicant Tracking Systems including Taleo, SHL and BrassRing, but after working with ADP’s VirtualEdge,
http://tiny.cc/6uOcR for the last 2 years, I decided to transition into a sales role with the ADP VirtualEdge team!
Six Degrees: What single event had the most impact on your recruiting career?
Kathy: The defining moment for me came when my first hiring manager credited his personal success to my efforts recruiting his team. The recognition I receive for helping bring top talent into our organization is my constant driver.
Six Degrees: Do you have a mentor to whom you attribute your overall outlook on recruitment, capabilities, and/or model your career after?
Kathy: There are a number of industry leaders I follow including Dave Mendoza., Lou Adler and Shally Steckerl. I have also had the privilege of working for a great manager, Gary Mika, whose support and mentorship promote the highest levels of performance.
Six Degrees: Tell us about your role at ADP, Kathy.
Kathy: Since I just transitioned into sales, I am focused on introducing ADP’s recruiting technology to Fortune 1000 companies within Southern California, AZ, HI, and NV.
My goal is to communicate how ADP can help automate hiring process and align strategies for acquiring, managing, screening, deploying, and retaining talent within organizations. I am so excited to share what VE can do!
Six Degrees: (A) What other companies' recruiting operations do you admire or have heard are best-practice examples?
Kathy: I have heard a lot about PWC’s recruiting strategies. Their integration of recruiting strategies with the company’s long term marketing goals is very unique.
Six Degrees: What recent general news story or industry trend do you feel will have an impact on your work in the future? Why?
Kathy: The buzz is Social Networking’ Social Marketing! A day doesn’t go by where I don’t receive an email for a webinar on how to capitalize on social networking/social marketing with regard to candidate sourcing/screening. With all of the sites available, it becomes even more important to have a repository for sourcing efforts, which should drive more focus for companies to have tools to create candidate pools and marketing campaigns, like ADP’s VE Pilot!
Six Degrees: What is your next career goal? What do you need to do to get there?
Kathy: My goal is to be an industry recruiting technology expert. This will require maximum visibility in the marketplace so both experience and exposure is key.
