I just got this note from my client. I'll share it with you including my note to him this morning. I find the last sentence rather interesting:

Me: Good afternoon Bob. It looks like we've been successful with Dave! He is very enthused about getting started.
Please let me know how I can help in his onboarding process. I'm here to help.

Bob: The current status with Dave is that he has an appointment near his home for a cursory physical and drug screen. When that’s official, we’ll set a start date. He is interested in starting on May 4 or 11. We’ll settle that once his medical stuff is done.

I’ll let you know as soon as the drug screen results are back that everything is official. You have done an outstanding job here in finding Dave for us. Our regular recruiters seem to have given up or disappeared.

I don’t know of anything you can do to help at the moment, but I appreciate the offer. Most recruiters disappear at this point.

"I'm here to help" would make a good tagline on your signature.
Hey Jerry -

As disappointing as it is I think there are a decent number of recruiters (independent, agency, and corporate alike) who think that their work is done as soon as the candidate accepts the job. There are a number of reasons why the recruiter should be involved beyond putting pen to paper on the offer letter. At the very least assisting through the onboarding process builds the relationship with your customer/managers and strengthens your position as part of the total HCM function. On the candidate side they have put a lot of trust in you and made a big career decision so what message does it send to suddenly duck out the moment they say yes?

On the positive side it looks like you're putting yourself in a position where the customer feels you are going above and beyond, and that can't possibly hurt the odds of future business.
