Hi Alex. I don't think we got the chance to meet personally at RecruitFest but I do recall us being in a few of the breakouts together. You struck me as someone very much in tune with today's staffing world.

Can I ask what is holding you back from working on your own? If that's too personal I would understand. I'm just wondering.

With today's technology and momentum in the whole "virtual" thing I'm curious which parts of working "solo" are not that appealing.

Believe me - I understand the need for the income between now and "then". "Then" being that sweet, sweet trip to the mailbox to find that - the check is here!!

If I were to loan you 20K - would you pay me back 200 or 300K? I don't think so. At least I wouldn't do it if I were you. But that's really the deal being worked out each time a senior recruiter joins another firm. You've got to start from scratch, dig up some clients and make a placement.

Now if you go into a corporate setting the rules and compensation all change. I don't know that world so can't speak about that.

Don't mean to tell you what to do since we don't know each other. I just really love the "free range staffing artist" approach to this whole world and the barrier to entry isn't anything like it was 20 years ago. I remember the agency were I started. Huge file drawers kept under lock and key. Telephone bills were thousands of dollars a month. Client names and phone numbers were much harder to come by.......

Today the vast majority of all that stuff is readily available for us all.

P.S. Yes - I'm opinionated. :) Just thought to maybe use this topic to get a few others maybe also in the same sitch to think about whether they really need an agency to get restarted or if it's time to do their own thing.

Kids change the dynamics though! I know exactly where you are with 3 here at home!

Hello everyone,

I just tuned in for the first time tonight and found you while surfacing the net a few days ago. I have years of recruitment experience .. corporate and agency ... IT, Administrative, Accounting, and mostly all industries. Would someone kindly offer directions to a lost sole? I would appreciate some feedback please regarding starting my own recruiting business – solo, just me. I am interested in learning the appropriate steps to take in order to do so plus in areas such as:

1. Having a web site developed or not? (the best source to use)
2. Would you suggest something like Go Daddy or others?
3. Domain / email address (the best source)
4. A candidate data base
5. A separate phone line / #
6. Job boards you post jobs on
(Affordable ones for someone starting out)

7. Where do you all post with success
8. The most successful candidate generating methods
9. The most successful client generating methods
10. The best communities – additional network groups to join
These are just thoughts. If some one would list the appropriate steps or offer advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I am asking you if you would share your trails and errors, bumps and burses.
As well, if someone would like to call me that would be great as well. Just let me know, please.
