Check Your Perception

Nausea and headache are normal when you suffer from a concussion. Normal still makes me worry. Gregory, my twelve year old, was struck by a car yesterday while riding his bicycle. His perception was off when he entered the street, the car closer than he thought.

After spending the night in the SICU, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Gregory was discharged late this afternoon with instructions for care and a scheduled return visit to the trauma center to check on his recovery. He is on the mend and I am, too. Never wanting to receive another call like the one I received yesterday, I have reinforced safety rules and declared the makers of Bell Bicycle Helmets as my heroes for 2009, thus far. Protection never meant so much to this mother. My youngest child survived a near fatal accident and will share with his friends and all he comes in contact with the "reasons" why safety rules should be adhered to.

Sometimes we forget the rules or manage a work-around during certain business dealings or a search in progress. Rules are there for a reason, the guidelines help up to understand where we are and how much further we need to push or stretch. Thinking outside of the box has become the norm for today's recruiter or HR professional; it may be conceived as a must for survival during the times we are now experiencing. However, there are a few rules that remain golden...

1. Treat your client or customer the way you would want to be treated.
2. Manage your company with loud ethics, the louder the better.
~This speaks to transparency.
3. Keep your vision visible - don't lose sight of it.
4. Work. Not everyone can do it. Those who can will survive.

When you question these or similar rules, be prepared with your own answer. Your reasoning power is strong and you will need it in whichever direction you decide to go. Your power to reason is what differentiates you from those less noble and other roaming animals.

So put on your helmet and be prepared for a road filled with decisions that may test the rules you have set for yourself or the rules that have been set for you. The choice is yours but know that your decisions can have the ripple effect, touching others.
