Anyone else feeling a bit scattered these days? It feels like my workload has tripled since January 1 and I am a bit unsure of how to get caught up. I continue to plug along and fulfill as many obligations as my little hands and smaller mind can handle. And through all this chaos that has become my everyday life, I somehow have found absolute peace and control. For this is a sign of recovery, it is a sign of the start of an improving economy. At least, as far as I can tell.

Yes, I have voluntarily added new pieces of delectable fruit to my plate for I have taken on a cross-networking project, as well as started a community-based blog in the city where I live.  But, interestingly enough, these ventures have developed out of a love of what I do. I love to participate in the Recruiting/Recruitment (depending on which side of the Atlantic you reside) Networking sites that are home to my profile and I love to write. Hmmm, most of us do what we do because we must. And this is what I do, for I must.

This industry sees the first steps toward regaining a healthy economy. It was just over one year ago when it was reported that temporary hires, for the first time in a couple years, were up – they had increased. It was just two weeks ago when the announcement was made that for the first time in a long time, the number of first time applicants for unemployment in the U.S. had actually dropped. The significance of this report is not lost on me or the company where I work. We silently celebrate the positive signs we are starting to see daily. Economic strife has taken its toll on every industry across the globe; we just have the glorious opportunity to witness its coming before anyone else, as well as its going.

Three and a half years ago, I struggled daily with Hiring Managers consistently, almost daily, making changes to job descriptions and offered salaries. The in-house confusion prompted my own personal job search, exactly as it should have. It is our job - our duty - to recognize the subtleties that will instigate change, lengthening or shortening a horizon.  So, what is our duty with regard to this information? What do we do with it?

I can tell you what I did with it. Survival of the fittest became primal and I put myself and my family first. I diversified enough to keep food on my table. And I know many in this industry who did the same. I also know many who left, many who were out of breath from the fight and simply gave up and walked away. The work is now on the uptick. And there are fewer players in the wings waiting to take the stage. What does that mean to you and me? Direct result, currently? Too busy to think, and certainly too busy to waste time. Now the food is on the table and I rarely have time to eat it, but I sure do savor it.
