Skills/Knowledge based assessments and profiling - what are the "fors" and "againsts" ?

Knowledge based assessments designed to profile the skills and competencies of individuals have not been around as long as Psych or Behavioural tests but are being used more and more by staffing/recruitment firms and beng relied on by companies recruiting.  

 

What are your experiences with these types of tests - positive and negative ?
