Great question Melanie.  I've found it beneficial to create team building activities that help people connect on a deeper level.  This means that they build skills like empathy, listening, sharing stories and understanding other perspectives.  It can be done by simply having group conversations and allowing everyone to have a voice without the usual interruptions and noise.  The idea is to build empathy by people listening to each other.  It also helps to talk about what just happened in the group after you're done with the activities.
