Well you know what they say, all good things must come to an end. As of March 2nd I will no longer work in the recruitment industry.

I'm going to be working in online marketing for a web hosting company, so a slight departure from Recruitment Marketing but using a lot of the skills I have built up over the years.

I have loved recruitment, I have hated recruitment. But throughout the time I have worked in the sector I have learned many things, the most important and transferable being:

  • Resilience. Sometimes in recruitment all the knock backs come at once. You upset a client on the same day your candidate accepts a counter offer and 2 other candidates don't show up for interviews. These things happen, no matter how well you might prepare. Recruitment has taught me to accept things not going my way and use them as opportunities to learn and come back fighting. It has taught me not to take things personally and not to crumble when everything is stacked against you.
  • Confidence. On my first day as a recruiter I was speaking to the directors of huge companies and candidates who earned more in a week than I did in a year. At first this was terrifying, but over time this became nothing scary at all. I love talking to people now, more than ever before and I have come to realise that if you sound confident, people will think you are.
  • Multi-tasking. Need I say more? Arranging interviews, managing an offer, searching, reference checking...the list is endless and we do it ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
  • Sales. I can now sell ice to polar bears and they will thank me for giving them such a good deal.
  • Accuracy. Sending a fantastic email full of typos? A job ad with countless spelling errors? Putting the wrong required salary on a candidate coversheet and sending it to the manager. If I did any of that how long do you think I would last in recruitment?

There are half a dozen more reasons why I have loved recruitment, it has given me the opportunity to grow and develop professionally and introduced me to such a range of people I might never have met. I honestly think I will look back on these years in recruitment as the years I learned the most in the shortest space of time. It's been a wild ride but I think for me, the time is right to get off.

I'll miss it, but I need a new challenge.
