With the discussons going on about big placements and memorable placements a comment made to my group by a hiring manager with one of our clients made me smile.
We had closed three placements with him that all happened to fall in the same week. Three of us had worked for two months to make them happen, then boom, boom, boom. We had gone through all the levels of excitement, presentation, etc. etc. holding our breath that the offers would be made, negotiating, waiting for the signed offer letters, background and drug tests completed, start date set, Done Deal! Breathing the first deep breath in two months and high fives all around, we slumped backward in our chairs and all agreed that we would take the first two days of the next week off to recharge the batteries.
When we came back to the office on Wednesday of the next week each of us had this message on voice mail. "You crazy recruiters are a trip, you hit a home run and then you disappear." "Call me when you get the money spent, i have a couple more that are critical."
Guilty as charged. I have done it throughout my career in recruiting. The few days after a placement closes i have to get away from it a day or two. If i don't my energy level and focus is just not there for the new position. I wish i were disciplined enough to be able to close one and pick up the next one with same energy. I am like the racehorse who just won a race, don't ask me to run again until i have had a little down time. If i lose one i can hit it and get it with the next one, immediately, that's a got to! Success send me to the showers and home to play with the cat like a zombie for a couple of days.
What happens to you when you hit a big one? Are you the type who gets pumped from one and can move on to make another one with the adreneline rush or do you crash like one of the giant redwoods?
