It looks like he sent the same message to all who previosuly accepted a friend request not so much every new person. So there was some thought behind it.

You're right about this; I should have noted this initially. I used "Welcome Wagon" because it connotes something that although well-meaning, is contrived. I find these mass greetings, marketings, et. al. disingenuous in the same vein as phishing.

Put up a blog post or start a discussion; I've been part of many online recruiting communities where these mass events practically take over the postings and responses to questions become marketing opportunities.

I agree with you. I had some more words to add after "So there was some thought behind it." including some thought but not enough of it. Then there was more after that but I decided not too.

It is annoying and will be interesting to see who is next.
