Utilizing social media and other similar tools for job hunting from a candidate's perspective

I recently read Arbita's white paper Act While Others Wait: Savvy Recruitment Marketing Strategies Now Ensure Success While Others Wait for Better Times. The paper basically discusses a survey that shows that while most Recruiting departments aren't satisfied with the results they receive from job boards, they aren't willing to make a lot of changes about their recruitment brand. I understand that the study is used as a way to promote Arbita’s services, but it did make me wonder about the use of social media, blogs and other similar tools from a job seeker’s perspective. I'm very curious about studies or surveys that measure the success of job seekers who have found employment, or even landed an interview through the use of these tools. Can anyone recommend white papers, or other resources that address this issue?
