Why I love Recruitment..Because what I do makes a HUGE difference to people

I’m one of those sad cases; 17 years and counting in the Industry, & over that time I’ve probably recruited across all fields in Temp, Perm & Contracting.

Along the way I’ve made money, & made a lot of money for the companies I’ve worked at. Including being in the million dollar biller club.

Sure I love the thrill of the chase – I’m that rare breed – the Hunter. And I’m focused on my budgets…but…

I’ve always believed you can’t be in this profession if you don’t really get what we do every day. So huddle in close Recruiters – here’s the  secret – We make a difference to people’s lives. And I love that.

I’ll give a couple of small examples that makes my heart happy;

I currently have on my books, a fantastic HR Manager who Contracts, I’ve known this fab lady for nearly 15 years – she is an outstanding HR Practitioner & loves what she does (as does the clients she goes too)….But ask me how she got into the HR field..

I placed her 15yrs ago as a Temp in a HR dept – she came to me as a young grad with not a lot of direction – she just didn’t know what she wanted to do in life. That temp role ran for over a year & over that time she was given more tasks and became more involved in HR & discovered she loved it. When the assignment finished I placed her again in another HR dept. Two years later she was taking her Post Grad in HR and her course for life was set.

That is the difference we make as recruiters – we give people careers, focus & happiness.

Here’s another – I recently ran into an old candidate of mine, so as you do, I asked her what she has been up to since I last saw her – about 10 years ago. “Oh” she said “I’ve been living in Qatar” Well that was a new one on me, so I asked her how she ended up in Qatar?

Well…

10years ago a lovely Temp came to see me and really wanted to get into TV – as it happened I held the contract for the national TV network in NZ & she was great, so enthusiastic. Next role that came up – she was my first call, she was so happy.

So another long temp role – they took her on permanently. She progressed though the production ranks of the current affairs programmes and ended up in Qatar working for Al Jazeera.

So she gained a profession, career & travelled all because I put her in a temp role 10 years ago.

How can you not love being a recruiter! Sure it’s tough out there and there are tough budgets & KPI’s to meet, the competition is fierce & it isn’t going to get better anytime soon.

But however you end up in Recruitment – Always remember when you look back on your career, hold your head high. People have careers, lives, focus & happiness & even roofs above there heads…because you were involved in key moments in their life.

How cool is that?!
