The Toronto Star claims that many Indian Muslims were originally low caste Untouchables who changed religions in order to get out of the caste system.
The origins of these ex-Untouchables, however, are apparently still remembered and despised so that Indian Muslims sometimes pretend to be Hindus in order to escape prejudice.
"Basu, who is a Hindu, also said discrimination has been "institutionalized," with many Muslims being denied employment in government and private-sector offices where 90 to 95 per cent jobs are held by Hindus. "
I have an Indian friend who loves to claim that Toronto is extremely prejudiced against visible minorities (which is totally untrue). But when The Toronto Star writes about prejudice in India he gets insulted protesting that the reports are highly exaggerated and overlook the fact that the Indian government has bent over backwards to protect minorities with affirmative action programs.
