If your not confident you can bill month in month out, then getting a job for a company and having a guaranteed basic salary is the primary reason for consultants not going it alone.

Secondly, running your own company is not for everyone, some people are not good working alone and find it hard to keep themself motivated and also do not work hard enough without a manager.
Who knows?

Decent recruiters tend to be self starters by nature so you'd think setting up by yourself would be a "no-brainer" - plus every interviewer I've ever sat in front of has always waxed lyrically about how your "desk" is just like your own business, bla bla bla...

The real reason, from what I've gathered over the years, is an abundance of young grads not knowing what to do with they lives, falling into the trade. A few years later and they either succumb to their self loathing and leave for something totally different or set up themselves - at least that was me anyway!
