Management finally got a gut full of it and had a knee jerk reaction and decided they were paying people to work. Welcome to the real world and you might have to wear real clothes too instead of looking like you got dressed out of the goodwill bag on your way to a backyard beer bust. Perhaps if people acted like functioning adults who need a job to support their families to begin with management would not have to put in rules that used to only be needed in jr. High and grade school. Rules and laws are normally enacted to correct abuse. Kept sending candidates, the hiring manager kept turning them down as not a fit. I finally decided to pay a visit to his office to talk to him face to face to see where i was missing the boat. When i walked in the door of the office i knew immediately. The place looked like hell, wastebaskets full, coffee running down the side of the file cabinet where the coffee pot was placed on top of it. the hiring manager looked like he had slept in his clothes for about a week. The other "ladies" in the offfice could have stepped out on the dock and unloaded a boxcar without changing clothes. I visted a few minutes came back to the office and found one of those candidates who was a pleasant old gal about 80 pounds overweight who wanted to work in her jeans. They hired her that afternoon, the hiring manager has referred other clients to me and at this juncture my candidate has been there for 10 years and drops by to bring me a burrito from the snack wagon at work now and then. Sometimes we really don't know what a fit is until we have the opportunity to eyeball the whole situation. Katherine Anne Farrell said: hmmm - that IS a good question. Over the years I've met many candidates who've fit into that category. We all know you don't have to LIKE every candidate you place - some people we just work with better than others. For me it depends on just how awful they are....: if they are competent and presentable, I would try to put aside my feelings and try to make a match - although I would definitely mention something to my client about my thoughts up front. I would not want to run the risk of my client wondering about my judgement or screening skills. On the other hand, if they are complainers, negative, gross or obnoxious in other ways - counseling them just doesn't work...sooner or later....they will show their colors. Comment on: Blog Post 'Women Dressing for Success in the Workplace': dress the way they do. So this thing sounded like something out of the 80's. Dont dress like a model. A model what? Some of the clasiest dressers in the world of work dress like high fashion models. Better to have said, don't dress like you are on the way to the bar and don't want to change clothes. But then maybe i know a different kind of "model" than you do. Better to have said, Don't dress like a frump. Now women understand frump and they don't like being frumpy. Tell a mature woman to dress her age and you just pissed off half the women in America because you mentioned two things that women get insulted about fast. Age and being told how to dress. Do you have a death wish? Most women in the workplace spend a lot of money on their clothes, they dress depending on their mood a lot of times and they like compliments like, "You look very nice today". Unless of course they are red eyed femminists who get pissed off if a male co worker does't drop his eyes and take two steps back before he says , "Good Morning". Oh and by the way, as a writer you might want to take a look at that one sentence where your grammar went off the rails a bit. I think it is "had seen" and not "had saw". Now as to equality, i hope to heaven men and women are never treated as total equals. I can not imagine wanting to sit around, scratch my nether region and tell sports stories. Albeit i can empathize with the guys when they starting bitching about their last property settlement. Go figure, maybe it was the way i dressed. In line with that i might suggest that you focus writing sports anaolgies unless of course you think all women should dress alike in little uniforms, with sensible shoes and white little blouses. If this old gal dressed her age i would be wearing support hose and a mumu. So thanks for the advice but i think i will stay on the model track. My four to five inch heels will make a grown man cry and the animal print causes barking at the moon. Now all you guys go find some Kaki's and blue shirts. Buy five of each so you don't have to make a decision, nobody will know how old you are and the dress code thinks you are part of the janitorial crew.
