Comment on: Blog Post 'Why Does Everyone Hate Recruiters?': t business don't know anything about the company they're calling, the job they're trying to recruit for, the candidate they want to present (who doesn't have any background for the specific position) or is presenting the candidate without asking the candidate's approval and make gradiose claims. In-house recruiters don't like that outside recruiters constantly pester them or go directly to hiring managers, but that's often because in-house recruiters won't communicate with them or give them status updates re submitted candidates. From the job-seeker perspective, it's that recruiters are rude, bring them jobs they're not fit for (usually the candidate is overqualified) and try to talk them into what a perfect fit it is and for candidates, it's that recruiters don't keep in touch or return calls. If I had a nickel for every person who thanks me for a response to receiving their resume (saying it's so rare), I wouldn't need to work any more. Topic: How to leave a great voice message...: really tell so far based on the data. I typically leave it somewhat vague (because in my area, legal, most candidates want in-house, and most of our positions are law firm, so I don't mention the employer type). But I'd love to hear if anyone out there has a format that they use for voicemails that seems to work well in getting candidates to return calls (for purposes of this discussusion, I'm really only concerned with candidates...) It's one part psychologist, one part advisor, one part confessor. You lead, you infer, you influence, you create. It takes years of practice to hone, to gain credibility, to get really good. This is why there are lots of average in-house TA folks and lots of agency 'sourcers' grinding everyday to make their minimum quota and only a few rock stars that really know how to create and add value. Comment on: Topic 'If every company has an internal recruitment team, how will consultancies play…': ent team could only use TPR if we had a very specialized / tough to fill role OR we were swamped and needed to get some req's off of our plate. You shouldn't assume that all in-house recruiters aren't "skilled" recruiters. In addition, at one point, more companies than not had internal recruitment departments. When many TPR firms moved away from being "specialized" and tried to dominate in all areas, that is when companies started outsourcing more of the recruiting and not using in house staff. While in many aspects that model worked, it didn't work in others. I think some TPR firms got too big and didn't really offer that specialized / expertise service they were known for. You now see, in some orgs, the "Recruiting Dept" making a return. In a smaller company, yes, they may have a Generalist handling recruitment. Again, don't underestimate their skill. I started as a Recruiter, who became a Generalist and was a Director of Recruitment. As a Generalist, my areas of expertise are Recruitment/ Talent Management. Other Generalist, there area of expertise many be Comp, Benefits, etc. I think TPR firms should focus more on targeting specific industries / professions instead of trying to be a jack of all trades trying to fill each and every role for a client.
