I mentioned to him that one typically dressed appropriately for a job interview. His response was that the job (as a driver) wasn't that important and that he had been told by his youth pastor that what he wore didn't matter. Needless to say... Comment on: Topic 'How to deal with a client who refuses to pay the placement fees??': ery nice to deal with it when comes to getting paid. They do't harrass or threaten people and have always gotten me paid when I thought the account was lost. Granted we've only used them twice in 14 yrs but they did their job both times. Amazingly both clients respected the fact that we didn't send them to some pitbull agency and were very appologetic for not being able to pay their bill in a timely manner. Not having a signed Agreement might be a wrinkle but if you have emails or faxes or anything saying that they wanted you to work the project then you might be able to collect. Understand, this "New client" will most likely turn into a former client if you send them to collections but either way do you really want to do business with someone/ some company that doesn't value your contributions? Comment on: Blog Post 'Hiring the “Aged”': e as well as age. first impressions are important and now are judged immediately as being too old, slow and out of touch because they show up to an interview without looking in the mirror. I'm a boomer myself, I've made it somewhat of a mission to try and help the over 50 to do well on an interview. It doesn't have anything to do with what they know or what they say, it is just the first impression look that I'm trying to help them with. Many of these people have been in the same job for years. They are hard working frugal people who have put families first. They need to be reminded that the interview is a one time shot at looking like you can handle the job. Clothes that are updated and fit well, hair and beard trimmed (including nose and ears), shoes shined. For the ladies, treat yourself to a salon visit and get good color on your hair if you have been doing that. Get a good hair trim, and wear clothes that are flattering for your figure. Post and pray? Never go to a networking event because they would be there with some ulterior motive to meet someone who might be a business contact. I see no difference between using twitter (if it works for you) in the manner this guy did and a recruiter contacting people on Linkedin. Twitter is not my cup of tea at this point to devote otherwise productive time to hours of following people but i do some of it when time is available. My concern about these wildly successful stories is that i see many fairly new recrutiers buying into "social media is the end all to be all". I liken that to some of the newbies i have hired in the past thinking that all they have to do is call every fortune 500 company in the country and they will then be a national presence. I have seem more recruiters die on the vine because they were looking for the silver bullet to be a big swinging who ha while the successful ones were placing people. My take is that if any channel is working for you by all means do it. I have evolved from 5X7 cards in a file box, print ads and a phone through computers, job boards etc.etc. always adding pieces and parts of each new wrinkle that came down the pike. I wish Linkedin, twitter and facebook would do an index of users by profession like the yellow pages. It would sure speed up the process without all the searching and following and lurking. But perhaps the fun of social media is that it is like an Easter Egg hunt.
