In October, the surf gets big and nasty in Santa Monica Bay. Sometimes you can't get past the breakers. Just so happens the LA Triathlon moved from early Sept to a month later a few years ago (when these pictures were actually taken). Lots of people are eliminated during the swim since they can't get out, others need rescuing. This particular year I got lucky (plus I'm a good open water swimmer) and got out fast finishing the 1500 meter swim 2 minutes ahead of the next person in my age group wave. Finished 4th, so not so good on the bike.
