The Goal of Professional Relationships - To be like Someone or be Among Many?

Depending on the time I arrive at my office, I can predict with great accuracy the activity that will occur between the time I step out of my car and arrive at my desk. One of my favorites occurs every morning at 7:10…

What Can We Learn from Ignatius Reilly?

"When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in confederacy against him."

— Jonathan Swift

In my spare time (loosely defined term), I have committed myself to go back and re-read some of the classic literature assigned to me during my formative years. As I have started this new year out with a moral constitution directed towards happy, positive thoughts - Heart of Darkness is still collecting dust on my bookshelf. Mr. Kurtz… Continue

My New Year's Resolution - A Ban on Ceramic Dalmatians

My New Year’s Resolution is quite simple. I will no longer be brainwashed by Pat Sajak.

In a less cryptic manner of speaking – I intend on imposing a ban on “Ceramic Dalmatians.” Wait. What?

For reasons unbeknownst to me, memories of my childhood are cluttered by the recollection of watching daytime… Continue

Merry Christmas

"Oh, the silent majesty of a winter's morn... the clean, cool chill of the holiday air... an [expletive deleted] in his bathrobe, emptying a chemical toilet into my sewer..."

-Clark W. Griswold (National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, 1989)

Yep, that sums up the outlook for the 2008 holiday season and the promise of prosperity in 2009. Only it was not Cousin… Continue

If Rocky Balboa Could End the Cold War....

One of my all-time favorite writers, Bill Simmons* of ESPN, credits Rocky Balboa for ending the Cold War by defeating Ivan Drago in Rocky IV . The thought is intriguing. Communism began its decline very shortly after this movie’s release.

I watched Rocky IV for the 200th time over the Thanksgiving holidays. I was astonished by the allegorical similarity of Rocky’s one-man disarming of the… Continue

The Charles De Mar Corollary

I like to reminisce. I find it therapeutic to reflect on the defining moments of my career every now and again. These reflections are also good for a laugh, which is equally as important.

One of my favorite things to reflect on is the learning curve that accompanied the early stages of my career in Talent Management.

What follows is a simple to apply, yet foolproof training program. The execution of this program hinges solely on one’s ability to acknowledge the cause and… Continue

My Thanks to All

I truly appreciate the kind words of the community and the generosity of this contest's benefactor.

I thought it would be interesting to share a brief back-story on how the piece evolved.

My son was in the hospital the week before the contest ended. My wife was staying with him during the day, and I would come up there straight from work so she could go home, see our daughter and prepare his food and sundries for the following day.

My Future in Recruiting as Dictated by The Tao of Jack Butler

"I understand that you little guys start out with your woobies and you think they're great... and they are, they are terrific. But pretty soon, a woobie isn't enough. You're out on the street trying to score an electric blanket, or maybe a quilt. And the next thing you know, you're strung out on bedspreads Ken. That's serious."

- Jack Butler (Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom, 1983)

What could an early 1980's Dramedy possibly have to do with my future in the recruiting/talent… Continue

Would Antoine Walker be a Good Recruiter?

An interesting question indeed. There are many recruiters, search consultants, headhunters or talent acquisition specialists (for the purpose of this article, all titles are interchangeable) whose skill and talent closely mirrors the approach he took to playing basketball.

Additionally, if you look at his career resume for his years in the NBA, as well as where he went to school, you will see the same trend that mirrors the career trajectory of a recruiter.

Let’s look at a… Continue
