The Twilight Zone

I'm back, friends!

After the longest blogging hiatus (read: lazy) in the history of the WORLD, I've decided to rejoin my favourite recruiting forum and start spitting chips at the industry that I decided to build my career in.

Silly girl.

I feel like I've been in the twilight zone the past few weeks. Nay, months. Calgary is quite the anomaly when it comes to unemployment in Canada. For starters, we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in IT…

Feedback - UR Doin it Wrong

Feedback is a rare yet critical piece of the job seekers path to a new career. It is so rare in fact, that when I actually receive feedback from a hiring manager, it is a lovely surprise, even if the feedback isn't so lovely!…

Honesty, Integrity, Compassion, Respect.

It's what we look for in a recruiter. Someone who is going to help in the job hunt, coach on how to get through the interview process, and provide all the…

Find Diamonds and Change Lives

Max Ehman wrote in his unforgettable poem Desiderata, 'with all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.'

The diamonds in the rough do still exist in recruitment. We've just got to take the time and find them. Having said that, there are times in this game when I too, feel the need to resort to violence when things don't work out.

In the discussion I wrote about… Continue

Employer Branding. How important is it to job seekers?

The Recruiting Animal show today had some discussion around the importance of employer branding.

And it got me thinking. Exactly how important is this to job seekers?

I get that promoting a certain brand/image is important to consumers, and to build customers and make lots and lots of money. But what about those looking for work? How does it fit into their job search?

I remember a few years ago I was working as a callcentre and customer service… Continue

RANT! Cowboy recruiters beware!!

Today I met with an exceptional IT professional, a candidate who has extensive experience in healthcare infrastructure (a rare skillset in Canada) who is in between contracts. It was a great conversation, and after a good 90 minutes, I came out of the meeting with my head spinning.

You see, this candidate has had a terrible experience with recruitment agencies in Canada. And for the first half of our interview he was putting me in the same cesspool as the other 'recruiters' he's… Continue

Motivational Music!

I re-synched my iPod last night. First time ever. I'm not very 'au fait' with iTunes, but last night I took the leap!

I'm not exactly sure how it works, but put my headphones on at work this morning, to write some killer presentations to accompany candidate resumes, and what I got blasting into my ears is nothing short of:

Amazing, awe-inspiring, EPIC, thunderous, get-up-and-moving, glorious...

I think you get the idea.

Every single song I've… Continue

Funny Article on CNN - you said WHAT in interview?!?!!

My favourite is "I'm not wanted in this state"

It's funny though if these candidates are getting through to a face to face interview, what kind of pre screening are the interviewers doing??
