Job Boards.... Not dead yet!

I was asked recently in an interview I did with Phillip Tusing on his site Destination Talent about the main source of my hires.

I know it seems to be en-vogue to proclaim the death of Job Boards, but I'm not convinced they are dead yet. Is it just because I am an internal recruiter and don't know any better? To… Continue

Is this the Death of the Revolution?

I saw a video today which re-ignited a thought of mine, which has been bubbling away in dormant fury for the last few years.

I have got fed up with generation generalisations. In particular the constant genuflecting to the Gen Y's of the world. Get ready world, change everything here they come! They need to be treated different, they expect more, more quickly, they care for the environment, the crave community, they are more fluid in their employment ideals, they are new, fresh, the… Continue

Recruiting must be more than just skills matching... doesn't it?

There was an interesting discussion I was part of the other day, which culminated from a blog post I read over on Recruitingblogs.com where Jane was questioning her own ethics and morals when put in a position to make a placement with a candidate she essentially thought was a jerk. (it was weird, refreshingly so, not a mention on Social networking, technology, or the recession anywhere in the post)… Continue

Pie night clarity

Wow... what a night.

A night of mayhem, madness, excitement, order and anarchy, and let's not forget, pride and fun and smiles.

That was my night tonight. I attended my son's first football club meeting, in the form of a jumper presentation and pie night (A great Aussie tradition). It was Zach's first involvement in a footy club, and his excitement all… Continue

Lessons from an "evil" boss

Working in the HR arena is tough! Especially in bad times. Who likes sitting across the desk from someone explaining to them that as of now your livelihood has been taken away. (I have only met person ((and catbert)) in my career who… Continue

Sunshine from the rain

I was getting depressed earlier this week. Things were getting tough at work, the recession was knocking on the door, I had a proper look at my taxes coming due, I was tired and I read a few disturbing articles.

One, I must say I was pretty late on. It was an article from November which reported on the fact that an employee in Sydney for global giant EDS… Continue

The Thumper Principle morphed into The Gambler edict

"If you can't say somfin nice... don't say nufin at all"

Phew, what a week... I had to really battle hard to ensure I kept the "Thumper Principle" in check. I really do prefer to live by this... I rarely react well emotionally, and tend to go over the top and embarrass myself when hindsight kicks in.

That said, I have this week so far self censored out 2 blog posts, 5 forum responses and 9 emails. By… Continue

When is the time of your career?

I remember growing up wanting to be like my heroes on the sporting field, I wanted to play AFL footy for Carlton, and of course play cricket for Australia, unfortunately I learned quite early I lacked one important ingredient to be successful in these fields.. Talent.

There was always hope though of course growing up, if I could practice that little bit more,… Continue

So much to do... so little time.

Hands up all those who feel this.... go on... I know you want to, or have wanted to in the past.

I have a problem.... which I am a little embarrassed to write about. For goodness sake I am a grown man, I should be able to work this stuff out.

My TO DO List has stretched amazingly, I swear when I left it the other day it was fine, quite happy swimming along, not a care in the world. Now, sitting here very late Friday night,… Continue

PART V: Happy Feet; the success of standing out!

I was reading this enjoyable penguin tale (yes I have the kids book and the DVD) and it reminded me of a tough economy and how to succeed.

Let me break it down for you....

Our Hero Mumble is the embodiment of what (I think) it takes to succeed in the current world.

Our little hero was a little… Continue

Why I Blog! Get involved we need you!

This is an interesting question. Why is it that I find myself sitting in the dark, with the whole household asleep, punching something out on the keyboard? Writing something that will "disappear" onto the internet never to be seen again,… Continue

I've finally made sense of "The Apprentice!"

So you're over Agency work.. over the sales? Over the cold calls? over the rejection? over the financial expectations? the stats? the KPI's? the managers looking over your shoulder? The feeling that no-one wants to talk to you? You've just got to get out of sales! I know the feeling. You think... I know Recruitment, I'll go into Internal Recruitment, or try to move up to HR (I hate that thought, UP to HR.... Seriously?, but apparently it… Continue

Greed is Good!

A catch cry of the 80's! A time of opulence, bad style and probably even worse music. It was the predecessor of the last recession, a time most famously known in Australia as "the recession we had to have". We may look back and snicker and scorn, but what will the next generation say about us? I think my hair and suit will stand the test of time, but who knows :)

Did "Greed is Good" make a comeback? Like the fashion? If not, what will people in the… Continue

Part IV: "Guess how much I love you?" - Gen Y v Gen X and Baby boomers.

I can't help it... I was going to write another blog tonight, but was given this book from my kids to read tonight and couldn't resist.

"Guess how much I love you" is a charming little tale of a little Nutbrown hare and his older, bigger, wiser friend Big Nutbrown Hare. It does sound a little sucky really, and the language is simple and easy, the kind that is easy to read to my kids, and fun to hear them recite. Hit "play" above and you'll see what I… Continue

The art of being WRONG!

This was a good week. I either learned something or crystallised a thought I had bubbling under the surface, depending on the hour and my ego will depend on which way that falls.

I have been with my company for almost 7 years now, and thought I had the whole place worked out, well I hoped I had. I know the IT industry, and how it works in my market, and I know the main players. I work for a company which provides IT services to tier one tier two companies, and my job is to hire… Continue

Part III: Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack, forging that relationship!

I simply love this story for a number of reasons, a) my son was named from it. (as a Recruiter, we had a short list of names when my son was being born (2 for boys, 2 for girls). When he came out the doctor announced "It's a boy! What's his name?". I mentioned our short list... the doctor said..."easy.. Zachary..... Zachary Quack") b) the Onomatopoeia and c) The lessons you can relate to day to day… Continue

Part II - The Very Cranky Bear - A child's tale re Consulting and/or Customer Service

Another of my favourite books I read my kids every night is "The Very Cranky Bear", by Nick Bland, my son received this book from Santa this year and it quickly became the most requested book in the… Continue

Be the Lucky Platypus

It's amazing where you can find inspiration. For those of you who don't know me I am the proud dad of 2 young children and live by the adage "sleep is overrated". One of my favourite times of day is pre bed story time, it is genuine quality time I get to spend with my children after whatever my work day did to me.. or maybe it is because it's just before… Continue

Dr Jeckell and Mr Hyde.. or more millennial... THE HULK.. Are we the same beast at work and at home?

Am I a different person at work and at home? Should I be? Isn't being me the thing I do best?

At the start of my career I used to laugh at some girls in my office, who had an official phone voice..... you know the types, they would be talking to you normally, the phone would ring and then the voice would lower, their vocabulary would dramatically increase and the… Continue
