Is threre really a war for talent or are Recruiters playing the shuffle game?

I guess the title is self explanatory. Companies are far less looking at recruiters to assess potential candidates. All they want is to steal from their competitors. If a recruiter works a certain niche market, he/she can make a good living just shuffling one person over to the competitor. Once that candidate has been with the competitor for 2-3 years (maybe more), the recruiter than takes that same candidate and shuffles him off to another competitor.There is no really 'assessment' of talent anymore - unfortunately.


Oh well, I guess recruiters can continue to play this 'game' and collect their fees from playing the 'shuffle game'....

I used to think that since i am a skilled horse trainer i should be able to train Zebras because they look like horses with stripes.  Then it dawned on me that there are a million Zebras in Africa and everybody walks.  You don't see people riding Zebras so it occured to me that somebody somewhere knew something about Zebras i didn't know so i best stick to horses.  Think about it.

As a recruiter who hires PLENTY of technology sales professionals I am telling you that my employer, with the exception of certain entry level positions, want sales people who have sold TECHNOLOGY.  I can't bring on that medical device sales person and have them pitching virtualization to a CTO without extensive ramp up time.  Now, if said candidate would like to go out and get VMWare certified and some other training that will add some punch to his resume I'd be happy to talk with him.  Until then I'll keep looking for people in my industry that can do the job and leave the round peg/square hole puzzle to someone with more time on their hands.

@Bill ok ok maybe I was yelling a bit.  :)  you're absolutely correct, and if I found that guy it's my job to uncover the virt background (or whatever) that makes him relevant and therefore presentable to my hiring manager.  Naturally I'm going to pull that out of him, but to insinuate that there's something wrong with the so-called "shell game" is downright goofy.  Of course there's a talent assessment, along with a whole lot of other assessments going on.  As far as the statement "All they want is to steal from their competitors.", well none of the companies I've recruited for have made that the "only" criteria.  If that was the case I could have collected a fee on both sides, placing the candidate and getting paid to remove the pain in the ass that isn't "bad" enough to fire from the competitor.  :)

Nice try Bill but that ain't no Zebra.  Just like some of the candidates you are trying to sell.  You can't sell me a horse with stripes painted on it and convince me it's a Zebra.

the expression "shuffling" also insults the intelligence of the candidate.  People are not pawns who can be picked up at the whim of a recruiter and moved across the street.  Aside from the fact that many of us have agreements with the companies we place with that we do not recruit or many times represent their current employees unless asked to outplace them.  As Barb said, ah but we should have that kind of power to play chinese checkers with people as if they were inanimate objects with no free will.  Sheesh!

@Bill hell if I know I just know I need people certified in it.  :)  One of my hiring managers started to explain it to me once and my eyes started glazing over... something about data being stored in a place that doesn't really exist...
