I have been in the Recruiting game for 18+ yrs and it is amazing how things have changed over the years.  What is your take on Recruiting in SA?  Easier or more difficult? And elaborate on your answer please :)

Marietjie- Things seem to change every 18 months, forget about 18 years. I do not have any insights to the South African marketplace, but one of the real values of the RBC. The ability to get global insights/struggles on international markets. So to maybe open up this topic a bit more, can you share your thoughts on if you have been finding things easier on your end? What is the temp market like in South Africa? and what is the one tool over the last 18 years that has made the biggest impact on your desk?

I find it ebbs and flows. I believe we are in a candidate short market at the moment. There are a number of reasons but key factors appear to be the weak economy where good people are not looking. Mostly out of fear of the unknown in this volitile economy. ("I've got a job so lets not rock the boat right now") The other thing I'm finding is a skills shortage in industry types that are growing in a weak market. The one thing we know is nothing is going to change in the forseeable future and we need to work smarter.

With the SA gov't and the unions doing their best to eliminate brokers, what is the prognosis for recruiters in South Africa. It appears to be that the unions and gov't want to make the recruitment industry an 'in house' function and thereby spread the corruption.

It is the Unions & not government that want this legislation passed. The Unions are threatening the government alliance to get their way. Sensible people in government would prefer to see the broker industry properly legislated. Union membership is dwindling rapidly and labor brokers don’t help the cause. Recruiters and labor brokers are seen as different entities so it will not impact on recruitment companies that work on perm positions only. The only impact this proposed legislation may have on recruitment companies is labor brokers will need to re-engineer their business so the industry will become even more competitive that it already is.

As a healthcare recruiter - i came across this interesting article this afternoon.....Health staff plan includes recruiting foreigners

 

Looks like you are facing the same health crisis as here w/. the shortage. Perhaps someone  from SA that works in healthcare can share some insights.
