Good post Gavin. I would only disagree with the section regarding recommendations. I personally have none and pay no attention to any in a profile.

Garnering good recommendations is, to me, only a measure of how many people you know. Most people will write the praise of anyone from casual acquaintances (he worked in another department bu the did work here) to close allies. (partner in projects)

However they may be at odds to throw their coat over the puddle for the same person. That is, make the ultimate sacrifice of personal integrity when contacted by a hiring authority to back their claims of how marvelous this person really is.

Hi Ben,

To an extent I agree with you  (Lets be honest its not hard to ask someone for a recommendation) however there is no argument that it does add credibility. Look at all major websites ... every website has a testimonials page.

Gavin- always good to read your content. I have often shared it with candidates in the past. Good to see your voice back in the RBC mix. I always have mixed feelings about IN recommendations. I hear what Ben is saying in that I often feel it is a close friend just adding fluff, but also note that it does often lend itself to offer some credibility compared to those profiles that have none. Regardless enjoyed the post and tips. Thanks.
