2012 Marketing Budgets Expected to Grow – Will Hiring Demand for Mareketers Regain Momentum?

Early in the year, we reported that the hiring demand for Marketing Managers was growing. However, since the 4-year high in May 2011, hiring demand for Marketers has been slowly slipping. In September, Recruiters placed a total of 17,000 online job ads for Marketing Manager positions, a 26% decline compared to May, erasing any job gains seen for this occupation in the first part of the year. However, many organizations are planning for increased marketing budgets in 2012 – will hiring demand for Marketers follow and regain momentum?

Marketing departments are projected to increase their spend in online and mobile advertising – two areas that we've reported to have increased hiring demand in the past. In September, about 7,000 jobs were advertised online for online marketing skills, such as SEO, social media, and digital marketing skills. Mobile skills were included in about 1,700. These occupations have also seen declines since the beginning of the year, although not as drastic, with a 12% decline versus January.

Some of the most commonly advertised Marketing job titles (other than Marketing Manager or Director) include Product Manager, Business Development Manager, Account Manager, Brand Manager, and Category Manager.

Despite a decline in hiring demand, the Hiring Scale™ shows that these jobs are likely to still be difficult-to-fill, with approximately 2 potential candidates in the workforce for every available job ad. Some locations will face more difficult conditions and possible talent shortages. For example, Fayetteville (AR) and Seattle (WA) will find Marketing jobs more hard-to-fill due to higher demand and a lower talent supply. According to the Hiring Scale, we can also see that some locations will experience easier recruiting conditions. The 5 locations where Recruiters are currently experiencing the easiest conditions include:

  1. Champaign-Urbana, IL
  2. Spartanburg, SC
  3. Athens, GA
  4. Altoona, PA
  5. Lakeland, FL

If your company is sourcing candidates for Marketing positions, these alternate locations will allow you to narrow down where and how you advertise and pull from larger talent pools – all of which can help reduce your time-to-fill for open jobs. This information can also be used to determine where to locate a position (if your company has multiple locations or offices).
