Starting university is one of the memorable milestones in one’s life. Although it is exciting to know what the future holds, it is also important to be prepared with what uni life has to offer. If you have decided to get a diploma of business administration, then you better be ready for challenges and competition because the world of business can be hard nosed.
The first year is always the most challenging. This is the time when students work hard to adjust and balance their school work and extra-curricular interests. The process can be a whirlwind of mock interviews, networking brunches, and other activities intended to inculcate students with professionalism and leadership.
Here are the 4 tips to surviving one’s first year in business school:
Being prepared does not always apply in academic standards. A soon-to-be business student needs to be prepared and comfortable with the new school. This can be done online or offline. Do it the old fashioned way by spending a day in campus before classes start. This will help you be familiar with the institutions grounds so you won’t have trouble finding your classes.
Also, do not skip orientation; this is when basic knowledge about the school you will be attending in the succeeding years is taught. Use the web to familiarize yourself with the institution and to learn about online registration, requirements, online offerings, etc. So, figure it out and get started.
Although university does not help pay the rent right now, it does pay you with marks and grades. Treat university as your full-time job and your grades as the currency. When you get your diploma you can cash in your savings and get a great job that will eventually pay the rent. Use whatever experience you may gain from summer jobs and gigs to impress your professors as you would do in a real job. How will you do this? Never missing classes and staying on top of assignments are good ways to start.
Business school is where you can find associated clubs for your career. The clubs focus on different aspects like accounting and marketing, which will look great on a resume, not to mention in job interviews. Joining clubs is also a great way to meet new friends who can eventually become your connections in the business world. Really get involved by joining case competitions or by organizing events.
Since it is a new school with new friends, there will also be new challenges. These may be ones you have yet to encounter. If you are having trouble, do not be afraid to ask. As a first year student it is understandable to have a lot of questions, use the university’s resources to help you succeed. If you need further assistance, speak with an academic advisor or professor to find a solution. Never put your academic career on the line.
Dealing with all the challenges in your freshman year for a diploma of business administration is nothing compared to what you will eventually face as a professional. Look far into the future, but meanwhile take it one step at a time. End the school year with ease through these first year business school tips.
