Every company or organization needs a temp worker at some point. Temporary, short-term or contract help from time to time. And there are lots of workers who are prepared to work part-time or on a contract basis. According to the Canadian Council on Social Development there were almost 3 million people working part-time and 13% working on a temporary basis.http://www.ccsd.ca/factsheets/labour_market/employment/index.htm
The challenge for companies is being able to fill this short term need as quickly and effectively as possible. But you also want to have a qualified temp worker you can trust and in the best possible world you’d like to be able to hire that same worker again or even hire them fulltime if the opportunity arose. Without having to jump through so many hoops that it becomes somewhere between impractical and impossible.
1-You’d want to be able to do it quickly
Speed may not be everything in the hyper-fast pace of today’s workplace, but it’s pretty high up there. And the reason you are hiring temporary help is probably because you don’t want to have your system or your productivity slow down. Also, by the time you realize you need somebody, it’s already too late. You just don’t have any time to waste in getting someone on board.
2-You’d want to be able to do it in a cost-effective manner
You know you need help, but you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg to get it. And you don’t want to get over-charged or gouged by any fees or charges that an agency may slide in later. You want an all-in price with no surprises. If possible, you’d like to only pay once for getting the same employee or the same service.
3-You’d want to be able to have a qualified worker
There’s no point in bring someone into your workplace who can’t pick up the slack right away. You don’t have the time money or energy to train a contract worker beyond the basic orientation and any safety or security rules. You need a fully qualified worker, with either direct experience or the capacity to get up to speed right away. Otherwise they cost you time, money, or both. You want to know that the worker you’re getting is qualified and you want to know it fast!
4- You’d want to be able to trust this worker
In addition to their basic qualifications you have to be assured that the temporary worker will not misuse or steal your resources or in any way hurt or abuse your customers and current staff. You may have to leave this worker alone with valuable equipment or maybe even your best customers or clients. In order to start trusting them you want to know where this person has worked before and to talk to their references.
5-You’d want to be able to hire that same worker again the next time or to offer them a longer term position if it was available.
One of the big knocks against traditional temp agencies is that they make it too difficult for employers to get the same employee back for recurrent assignments. And they actually discourage the hiring of their agency workers on a full-time basis. In some ways they are simply protecting their interest, but what about your needs? Why can’t you hire someone who has proven themselves to be qualified and trustworthy? You should be able to without having to pay an exorbitant fee to the agency to get your man or woman.
