When Dreams Aren't Enough: What Keeps High-Schoolers from College
Only 59 percent of Chicago high-schoolers who aspire to a four-year college actually apply--and fewer still enroll. In a three-year study released in March, SSA professor Melissa Roderick reports that many qualified Chicago Public Schools students, especially Latinos and African Americans, have trouble navigating their way to a postsecondary education that matches their capabilities. Among the underlying factors: weak high-school guidance, the rising cost of college, and a lack of information about financial aid:
