In the world of business, it’s not enough to create a great product. Getting the product in your customer’s hands is often one of the most important parts of the process. After all, if you’re client cannot find the product there’s no chance he’s going to buy it, and if he buys it online, straight from you, and doesn’t receive it on time, then the odds of repeat business become significantly lower. Logistics can make or break a business, so as a business owner it’s important to make sure that the processes are always optimized in order to ensure that the supply is always were it needs to be.
We live in an age of automation, you can spend thousands of pounds in the best automatic conveyor belt system for your warehouse. However, having the top technology in the current market is not a guarantee that your product is going to be handled and distributed in the most efficient way. If you don’t have the right staff, with the right knowledge, then the technology becomes almost irrelevant. Take some time to train your personnel and make sure that they all know how to handle any equipment you have in the warehouse, incentives and bonuses are also a great option to make sure that everybody is giving their best on the daily basis. When dealing with logistics it’s easy to look at just the process and forget about the human element. But, in the end, every business is about the people, the people that manufacture, distribute and purchase the product. Don’t lose sight of the needs of your employees and don’t put your staffing needs on the background. Your employees are the soldiers on the frontlines, so they better they are, the more capable they are going to when it comes to dealing with the daily challenges of a top notch supply chain
Shipping and handling is something that most businesses take for granted. Seems like getting the product from point “a” to point “b” is not much of a challenge, but the reality is completely different. If your product arrives late to its destination or arrives damaged, then this is going to seriously affect your business. All it takes is one shipment gone wrong for a retail channel or an end customer to think “Let’s consider the competition”. You need to make sure that you have the most reliable transportation and shipment in the market, full stop. Think about Amazon, it’s not just about having a massive selection of items in the store, if they took months to arrive to your front door you probably wouldn’t shop with them as much, if at all. Shipping is crucial and it should be at the top of your list of priorities when it comes to logistics. If you need help with your product, then you need to find a company that’s reliable and trustworthy, channels of communication need to be always open, and package tracking is a must. If you have your own in-house transportation system, then GPS and a direct line to your drivers is required. The more you know about a package and the people handling it, the easier everything is going to be.
If you’re a business owner, then you simply cannot afford to ignore logistics, and constant improvements should be a priority. A little bit of extra oversight on your supply chain and other processes goes a long way and leads you to cutting costs, improving profits and an overall better business.
