Another Recruiter Sullying Our Good Name

I think Sandra posted a blog a few days ago about an embarrassing email (obviously automated) looking for a lower level candidate sent to a C-level candidate/friend of hers. So naturally a few days later, I got a similar email.

I am 24 years old, 2 years out of college and still in my first job (as a recruiter, which I love). I in no way shape or form even remotely qualify for this position, not to mention I don't have any of the certification requirements. My experience is essentially as a bartender and an intern in college and 1 year as a recruiter.

I am debating sending a response telling her how lazy she must be to not even have read my resume to see if I qualify, but I thought it would be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on how I should word this (unless you think I should just hit delete and ignore the email altogether). Here is the email:

Indian contract firms.
The Nigerian princess of recruiting
Email spider bot

Just think of us as God's little sunbeams.  Not to be confused with God's little sledge hammers.

My favorite is the Consulting firm that sends a mass email with everyone's address and then people hit reply all to say "PLEASE REMOVE ME FROM THIS LIST" which is spam in itself.  Not just spam but dam stupid spam

That gets the oscar.

Bill, I remember that!  I believe you and I were dealing with the same spam.  Hilarious!  There were a couple of days of excessive emails..

I have one candidate who is having a blast with this junk.  Every time he gets one he forwards it to all the others scum buckets who have sent him one.  Talk about a roll up list.  He gets some responses back asking why he sent it to some of them.  He emails back and tells them he was wondering the same thing about the one they sent him but since they seem to like spam he wants to make sure that they get a lot of it.  He says when somebody asks him what he does with his spare time while he is looking for his next success, he tells them that he spams, spamming recruiters

The problem with America today is that we accuse those who call out bad behavior as being unprofessional while we give the bad actors an excuse. The "unprofessional" in this deal is the person who did the unprofessional spamming, not the person who was on the receiving end of it and had the guts to say so. By covering up or ignoring smarmy behavior in our industry we encourage it. Calling out unprofessional behavior is not only responsible self governing it is the most PROFESSIONAL thing we can do. Megan did not go looking for Kathy's intrusive spamm or email address. It was dumped on her. If this person did not want her email address made public she had the option not to mass mail it. Whichever of her several identities did it.

I guess so Sandra, I just don't see the importance of it enough to feel compelled to take any action apart from etiher deleting or blocking.  I save my indignation for other things.

This post and the comments haven't bothered me until I was called unprofessional. Than you Sandra (and everyone else) for your support. I'll admit, I didn't realize I was posting her email address when I posted this. I copied and pasted her email exactly. If we all should look at the human factor here and forgive honest mistakes, maybe I should be forgiven for my mistake as well. And I will once again state, in case you missed one of my other comments, I did not respond to the email, I deleted it and moved on. I posted this blog post as a fun Friday post and a lesson to my fellow recruiters. Im sorry that it has turned into what is has, but can't we all just take it easy and have fun when a post is intended for fun?
