Find yourself drunk with envy at your highly successful working friends? Having trouble saying “No” to every network invite you receive? Tired of the rejection, invitation, rejection? Too busy counting the increase in the number of unemployed this week? Well, I’m sorry to say the diagnosis is in, you are a jobaholic! Obsessed, worrying about the job you have or the one you are about to lose. Don’t worry, there is a guaranteed 3 step program that will help you combat your addiction no matter what the cost and get your sanity back!

Rule Number One: In this job market, accept the things you cannot change. It’s always nice to know however when you are right about something. You get a promotion, you celebrate the big raise, you are ready to take on additional responsibility. But, when you are stuck, unsure and struggling to figure which way it up, it’s okay to just let go and accept things just as they are. That doesn’t mean you should give up on your dreams or aspirations. It just means you are wise enough to know when to wait for the right opportunity to come along and not spend time worrying about the alternatives or the “what ifs”. Second guessing yourself, even with the best of intentions, will do nothing more than paralyze your progress in the long run and cause unnecessary unrest now. Sit, wait and trust. You’ll know when the time is right to make a move.

Rule Number Two: Know when it’s time to make a change. Over confidence sometimes leads us down the wrong road. If only we had waited and given it a day or two to respond. Maybe you said, “No” or “Yes” too fast, maybe you didn’t move fast enough. It takes a great amount of courage in yourself to trust and know when the time is right to make a career change. You are in control of the on/off switch that supports your decision on when you should just quit the low paying, de-grading position you’ve held for years just to pay the bills, in favor of harnessing the job of your dreams whatever that might be. Having the courage to face our fears even in times of uncertainty, and trust that your own inner compass will lead you down the right road at the right time is all you need to know you are on the right career path.

Rule Number Three: You are wise-”Go With It!” No one can tell you what is right for you. Not even well-intentioned advice blogs like this one. You are your best advisor. Know the difference between trusting in what you want and going after it, from the temptation of listening to what others tell you to do. You know your skills, aptitude, capabilities, desires and strengths better than anyone else. You know what will and will not work for you. From your salary desires to your work environment, you are the leader of your own career destiny.

Remember, you are not alone. You have the wisdom, courage and serenity to move forward in this career maze and master the unknown. There are many more of you out there looking and fearing the same thing. You share the same concerns whether you are miserable in the career you have, or are frantically afraid you will never find another one. And some of you, are just looking for something that will help you through the fear that this economy has shaken out of all of us. It’s okay to be a jobaholic, we all are on some level. The difference is to know when it’s time to get the help you need and face the truth about your career goals and what actions you will take once you do.
