Industry career outlook predictions aren’t developed yet for the Virtual Assistance industry.

I’m not sure if that is because it’s a new field or because the tasks done by VA’s are as varied as the VA’s themselves. One has to examine similar fields and skill-sets to see how VA’s will fare in the years to come. The career outlook for Virtual Assistance is above average if you look at similar fields.

The question of “Will this job still be around in 20 years?” is answered by looking at the services that a specific VA is offering. Compare the VA’s services to closely-related “traditional” employment positions.

Technology

Keep current with technology and software that can progress your business. If you only know outdated technology, then you and your business are out of date. Your clients may go elsewhere for service.
Keep adding to your services and learn everything you can about your niche market. Stay aware of what they currently need.

Market yourself

Many businesses are currently restructuring and downsizing (getting rid of middle managers). Companies are utilizing secretarial and administrative support staff to take over those duties.
Offer administrative support as a VA to those downsizing companies. Market yourself as an off-site solution and your “job security” looks pretty good. You will have competition from on-site employees for these positions. Keep that in mind.

Specialized Services

If you offer more specialized services than administrative support, you have more options for sustaining an ongoing career. Here are two examples:

If you offer Copywriting services, your career outlook is fantastic. copywriting career outlook
Different organizations; businesses, nonprofits, universities, hospitals and more, are searching for copywriting specialists. They are looking for an expert to do more than “tell their story.” The skills of copywriting success; creativity, initiative, good judgment and the ability to communicate. Freelance copywriting and copywriting specialist positions are growing. This is according to Canadian and American occupational outlooks.

If you offer Desktop Publishing services, your career outlook is also exceptional. Many companies are outsourcing these services, as opposed to having in-house staff. VA’s offer an affordable alternative to hiring a graphic design firm.

Outsourcing

It’s clear that Virtual Assistance is catching on and the VA’s who are out there aren’t going anywhere. Specializing in desktop publishing, graphic design or copywriting is an awesome specialty.

More and more employers and companies looking to outsource projects. They are turning to offsite personnel to fulfill these needs. The view of using “virtual” workers is changing. Many people have heard of VA’s now or know someone who uses a VA in their business. In most cases, once someone has a VA on their team, they don’t turn back to in-house staff to fulfill those duties.
