February Another Record Month for Green Jobs

Green JobsFebruary was another record month for green jobs with over 11,500 green jobs indexed, following our previous record in January with almost 11,000.

The number of current green jobs again reached a record today with over 10,800 green jobs that are less than 60 days old.

California is, again, by far the top state for green jobs creation, followed by Texas and New York:
  • California: 1,892 jobs
  • Texas: 620 jobs
  • New York: 586 jobs
  • Massachusetts: 471 jobs
  • Colorado: 374 jobs
  • Pennsylvania: 374 jobs
  • Virginia: 354 jobs
  • Florida: 331 jobs
  • District of Columbia: 295 jobs
  • Illinois: 285 jobs
  • Washington: 279 jobs
  • New Jersey: 272 jobs
  • Oregon: 264 jobs
  • Maryland: 223 jobs
  • South Carolina: 219 jobs

The top 15 above are very similar to our January top 15, with North Carolina dropping out in favor of South Carolina.

In addition, 533 green jobs are "virtual" or can be located anywhere in the US.

The number of companies advertising for green jobs indexed by The Green Job Bank has also reached a peak, to 2,090. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, far from 41,000, the number of green companies estimated in a recent report by the Brookings Institution.

If we applied the proportion we have today of 5.64 jobs per company (11,800/2,090), the total number of open green jobs could be estimated at over 230,000. Given the fact that not every vacancy is advertised online (as little as 15% to 25% of total vacancies according to several sources), and that our 2,090 companies represent about 5% of the 41,000 estimated by the Brookings Institution, the total number of open green jobs can be estimated at between 200,000 and 230,000.

The same companies as in the previous reports are at the top of our list, with AECOM, Xantrex, ERM and NextEra Energy topping the list:

Since these numbers change daily, please note that by the time you read this post, the numbers above will have changed.
