Getting the Best And and Most Talented Computer Science Graduates for IT Jobs

In the age of technology, the demand for people who know how to handle computers and machines is rapidly growing. This is following the advancements of technology. With computer science as one of the college courses that are very much in demand these days, there have also been a lot of untraditional ways of learning the materials.

What most companies find very hard when employing computer science graduates would be screening out who the best talents. While having a  degree in computer science can be helpful, experience is much more valuable Here are a few tips on how you can properly screen your candidates so that you only hire the most deserving.

Know What you Are Looking For

What kind of IT specialist are you looking for? Do you need a special set of skills on a certain type of program? Or do you need someone who is a jack of all trades and can take on a number of fields? The key here is for you, as an employer, to dictate what you want by knowing what you are looking for in a candidate of computer science.

Set Up A Criteria

After you have determined what you need from your candidates, you now have to set up criteria wherein you can use in choosing the candidates. Come up with criteria for the ideal candidate and judge how close each candidate comes to what you are looking for.

Look at the Experience

Experience is the most attractive aspect that any graduate can show an employer. Of course, most fresh grads would be baffled by how they can have experience when they are just fresh from college. Well, the answer there would be to participate in extracurricular activities, internships, and part-time jobs. As an employer, you must focus in on the candidate’s experience to know how well he or she can fit in the job.

A Degree is a Plus, Depending On The Position

In computer science, there are many professionals who work without a degree, if you are looking to recruit for a programmer position, the experience is probably the most important thing. On the other hand, if you are looking to recruit for a developer position, a broad education is a must. The University in which the candidate learned in is an important factor, but you don't have choose only candidate from anivy league, sometimes candidates that learned learned an online computer science degree are the most promising ones since they already probably got experience as well as a degree and demonstrated strong will and high learning abilities.

Ask Situational Questions

The best way to know how an IT candidate responds to problems is to ask what he or she will do in a given situation. Ask situational questions based on real life problems so that you will know whether the candidate knows how to handle events that may happen in the office.

Ask for Sample Works

You may also ask for some sample works that the candidate has done. For example, if you are looking for a mobile app developer, then ask if the candidate has made an app before.

These are a few tips that can help you nail the best candidate for the job. When you are choosing the best applicant, it is always critical to focus on skill over academic achievement. While high grades and academic prowess are impressive, they do not come close to practical skill and talent needed in offices. When hiring IT professionals, the skill is more important than educational attainment.
