The world’s population is expanding on a daily basis - it is estimated that by 2050, there will be 9.7 billion people on our small planet.

That sheer number of people that will exist on the planet by that time means that there will be a larger need for energy and power than at any point in human history to date. As a result, governments around the world will be devoting an increasing amount of time and money towards solving their energy needs. With fuel commanding higher prices than ever before - finding new and alternative sources of energy has never been more important – or more lucrative. The energy sector is undoubtedly a boom industry right now and deciding to enter it represents a very sensible business decision.

However, as lucrative as energy is, it is also a very competitive area. Just as lots of companies are jostling for market space, lots of highly talented individuals are also competing for the best jobs. In order to secure one of those jobs, you need both training and qualifications.

The Warsash Maritime Academy in Southampton is one of the world’s foremost maritime training and education centres. Operating as a part of Southampton Solent University’s Maritime and Technology Faculty, the Warsash Maritime Academy offers training and education (as well as top drawer research and consultancy services) for those wishing to enter the world of international shipping, commercial yachting, renewable energy and offshore oil and gas.

It is the last of these (offshore oil and gas) that is arguably the most lucrative area of the energy industry right now. However, in order to work in offshore oil and gas, it is also necessary to take offshore survival courses. Although the work is often very well paid, offshore oil rigs and suchlike can be dangerous places and you will not be able to gain employment unless you have taken the necessary training courses.

Warsash’s offshore survival courses cover all the basics, including escape chute training, emergency situations, helicopter exits (including underwater evacuation) and compressed air training - in short, everything you need for a career offshore.
