HOW TO INTERVIEW LIKE A JEDI (OR A JUST A GOOD GUY)

You don’t have to use Jedi mind tricks to be successful in an interview. Yes, even you can harness the power of your midi-chlorians and use that power for good. Here’s some sound advice from our favorite Star Wars heroes to help guide and inspire you during interviews.

“Your focus determines your reality.” – Qui-Gon Jinn

During an interview, be mindful of where you’re directing your focus. Are you honed in on how nervous you are or how much you’re talking? When you focus on something, it becomes amplified, it becomes your reality. Direct your focus on the interviewer or on gaining more information about the typical challenges of the position. Align yourself with the current state of the company and focus on whether the opportunity represents a good career fit.

“Somebody has to save our skins.” – Leia Organa

For every interview there is a reason why they brought you in. There is a space that needs filled or a problem that needs solved. An interviewer is looking to find out if you’re the person who can join the team and contribute meaningfully. Figure out early in an interview what their hero looks like so that you can spend the majority of the time having a conversation about potential areas you can apply your expertise.

“In my experience there is no such thing as luck.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Know that every seat you sit in during an interview is yours because you belong there. A hiring authority looked at your resume and based on your qualifications alone, called you in. They took time out of their own day (and potentially pulled others away from their paid positions) to get to know you. It wasn’t luck that got you there, it was intention. Treat your interview like you made it happen, and not like you won the lottery.

“Never tell me the odds.” – Han Solo

There are many things in life that are truly frightening if you just look at the numbers. Your odds may not look particularly great for the position that you’re interviewing for, but those numbers aren’t for you anyway. Your whole purpose in an interview is to be awesome and optimistic and to make sure your interviewer knows it.

We are so very excited for the release of Star Wars: Episode VII and we hope that you all find these words of wisdom inspiring. May the Force be with you.
