Linkedin & Facebook - difference makers

In a job market were companies are searching for new and highly qualified candidates to fill positions within their organization, Social & Business networking sites have enabled candidates to search for jobs in new and innovative ways. Many candidates opt to send their resumes to companies via email or apply directly to website postings. More and more job seekers, however, have taken things a step further. They have posted a video taped interview of themselves on their website or on YouTube (www.youtube.com) for potential employers to view. This is a great way to give employers a sneak peak at your poise up front. This can be done using a digital camera, a video file, or several professional services.

Networking events have been a staple of job seekers in the past. Today, there are several websites dedicated to online networking. Sites such as Linkedin (www.linkedin.com) & Facebook (www.facebook.com) tout themselves as networking forums. For example, I am a member of LinkedIn (http://www.linkedin/in/excelrecruiting) and this site allows me to “link” with other professionals that I know and view the connections that they have. This is a great way to network with industry professionals for the purpose of career opportunities or sales leads. Linked-in also allows you to create and join industry specific groups.

Facebook has a great feature that gives corporations the ability to create a page dedicated to their business. Companies can post news releases, new job opportunities, company info, and much more!

Traditional methods for finding employees and job opportunities are still highly effective. But with Linkedin nearing 40 million members and Facebook closing in on almost 200 million, this is a trend that will not be going away anytime soon. Knowing how to navigate these sites could be essential!
