Market for Social Media Skills Heats Up for Summer

Social Media continues to be a hot topic, and the job market for those with social media skills and experience keeps getting hotter. In April we took a look at online job posting activity for the search phrase "social media" and found 19,000 new ads for the previous 60 days. For the month of May alone, however, we're seeing over 26,000 new job ads containing "social media". Unsurprisingly, Marketing Managers and PR Specialists account for 29% of the positions overall, but it seems that more and more seemingly unrelated occupations have some need for social media capabilities. The most in-demand occupations for this keyword are listed below, along with the percentage change from April.

The top metro areas looking for this talent are NYC, San Francisco, LA, DC and Boston, but demand grew most rapidly in Atlanta and Cincinnati. New York metro area employers alone posted 3,091 new ads that included the term "social media", nearly 12% of all new ads in May.

The job breakdown for these positions leans heavily on temporary and part-time hires, as well as internships. The percentage of positions that are marked as internships has increased from 6% to 9% this spring. It makes sense for employers testing the social media waters for the first time to do so without committing to full time hires.
