Pixar’s Inside Out: Getting into a hiring manager’s ‘Headquarters’.

Today marks the UK release of Disney Pixar’s latest animation picture, ‘Inside Out’, a story that focuses on a girl named Riley and her emotions — joy, fear, anger, disgust and sadness. These emotions are the occupants of her mind (otherwise known as, ‘Headquarters’), the control centre for all of her feelings. As she and her family adjust to a new life living in San Francisco, Riley’s emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school life.

Recruiting for your business can be extremely challenging when you have a million and one other things to be doing and often, these emotions can interfere. We thought we’d share some of the typical recruiting emotions you might experience as a hiring manager and how a technical recruiter can help to make sure that joy is the emotion that always saves the day.

Anger -

“Anger feels passionately about making sure things are fair. He has a fiery spirit and tends to explode when things don’t go to plan.” - Pixar

If you’re a hiring manager you’re busy, that’s a given. Your department or business needs to expand or replace lost personnel in order to stay as effective as it can be, but your daily diary is no doubt jam-packed with other ‘must-do’ activities. Recruitment is a time consuming process to manage and anger usually takes over when there just isn’t enough time to do everything you need to do.

That’s where a technical recruiter comes in. Outsourcing the headache of screening CVs, sourcing candidates and vetting the best people to somebody that truly understands the skills and characteristics required will save you significant amounts of time. This will allow you to focus on the most important part - interviewing and making a hiring decision.

Disgust -

“Disgust is highly opinionated, extremely honest and prevents Riley from getting poisoned, both physically and socially.” - Pixar

As a hiring manager, you’re the person that has the deciding vote on the people you bring in. Your job is to protect your business and its culture on a social level. The concept of ‘team fit’ is becoming more and more important in the hiring process; you could hire a candidate with the very best skills but if they can’t work well with the rest of your department, their presence could be detrimental to what you’re trying to achieve.

Consultative recruiters focus on the bigger picture. If your business’ ethos simply doesn’t marry up with the candidate’s attitude, perhaps they aren’t the right hire for you. Creating a dynamic, fully functioning team with the right skills is your responsibility, but you don’t need to do it alone. A great recruiter will help you from start to finish through the hiring journey.

Fear -

“Fear’s main job is to protect Riley. He is constantly on the lookout for potential disasters and the dangers in Riley’s everyday life”. - Pixar

What will happen if you don’t fill the role? Perhaps the market you’re hiring in is job-rich, giving your candidate too much choice to go elsewhere. Perhaps the challenge is that there are too many candidates to choose from; how do you know the person you’re bringing in is truly right for the role? Making the wrong hiring decision can be scary. After all, the wrong team member can demotivate your team, disrupting the perfect balance you’ve no doubt taken a long time to create.

A great recruitment consultant will take the time to advise and support you as you take the steps towards hiring. Their extensive network of candidates will allow you to target great candidates you may otherwise not have found. Their knowledge of market trends will help you to make sure your role is truly attractive to your prospective employees too — what salary should you pay? What will really sell your company to them? What is the key motivator for the typical candidate in your sector? All useful insights that will give you a head start against your competitors.

Sadness -

“Sadness would love to be more optimistic and helpful in keeping Riley happy, but she finds it so hard to be positive.” - Pixar

Finding the right person takes time, there’s no doubt about it. Perhaps you’ve gone out to several generalist recruiters, seen hundreds of CVs and don’t seem to be getting anywhere. Don’t panic – it happens from time to time, though it can be hard to stay positive and sometimes sadness takes over.

A true specialist will take the time to go back to the brief with you. Maybe there’s a compromise you could make in terms of salary, location or skill requirements. Truly understanding what your business is looking to achieve is at the heart of the best recruiting partnerships.

Joy -

“Joy’s goal has always been to make sure Riley stays happy. She is optimistic and determined to find the fun in every situation.” - Pixar

There’s no doubt that joy is the most important emotion in the recruitment process. Finding the right candidate is the difficult part, but once you’ve filled the role and brought in your candidate, the fun really begins. Your project or department will get rolling and your business will be able to continue growing. You’ll have time back to focus on what you do best – managing.

Recruitment doesn’t have to cause you a headache. There’s no doubt that finding the right people for your business can be a challenge, but enlisting the support of the right partner will really help streamline the process and keep those emotions in check.
