Like the neglectful parent who turns a blind eye to the potentially harmful actions of a child, many leaders engage in at least periodic neglect of staff. Inconsistent accountability, lack of metrics and goals, and regular shifting of strategies (also known as the flavor of the month) are just a few ways managers perpetrate employee neglect.

Some of you who read this will immediately believe that “many leaders” does not include you. Yet, you’re probably at least an occasional and, most likely, unintentional offender.

Radical accountability is extreme only in that the practice of a persistent form of responsibility creates radically improved results. As parents, this type of structure is our gift to our children as it helps to ensure they live long and healthy lives. It’s time to extend this gift to ALL of your employees and do your part in supporting them in having long and healthy careers.
