Changing technology in digital communication in general, and social media in particular, has tremendous implications for organizations and how they function - not just externally (with clients, customers, and other stakeholders), but internally as well. The impact of social media cannot be overestimated - even if you don't believe a digital revolution is underway, the technological advancements currently taking place will have a significant impact on how organizations function in the (not-too-distant) future.
Proper management of the rise in digital communication/social media is critical to ensure that organizations respond effectively to the challenges and opportunities these changes present. Functional areas most likely to be involved in intra-organizational social media projects include Human Resources, Organizational Development, Training & Development, Recruiting, Talent Management, Information Technology, Project Management, Communications and Legal. Practitioners in these areas will need to be prepared to provide necessary leadership and support on these projects, in addition to preparing themselves for the importance of social media in their own career development.
