All social media software, from the most obscure niche forum to giants like Twitter and Facebook, is a potential marketing goldmine. Using social media for marketing purposes, however, is not like managing your personal profile or posting tidbits 'just for fun.' Knowing exactly how to tap these goldmines requires different tools and approaches, and here are a few ways for you to tap these different environments:
Networking sites
Networking social media sites like Facebook are some of the most sought-after social media software when it comes to marketing. The sheer variety number of users is a huge potential for increasing eyeball coverage, which translates to some pretty stiff competition for those eyeballs.
You can take advantage in one of two ways: by signing up for advertisements in these sites or forming networks users that are interested in your products or services. The latter is the more profitable choice, especially when you have a plan that focuses on expanding your networking efforts. This rapid expansion, either by building networks or having more people join your networks, will expose you and your product to a much wider consumer audience.
Internet forums
If social networks is all about massive numbers, then forums are all about tight-knit communities that are bound together by certain factors. If you are looking for a small but potent market for your goods and services, then participating in forums is one of the best places to do so.
This platform of social media software is one that cannot be penetrated by brute force, and requires a personal and technical level of involvement to be a member of the community. You will have to contribute expertise and technical know-how to become recognized, which will pay off when forum-goers take an interest in your site. Blatantly advertising your website is usually frowned on in these communities, so make sure to be subtle about posting links to your site during discussions.
Blogs
Blogs are something of a cross between social networks and internet forums. You post content that is relevant to your target consumer audience, and you connect with other bloggers who discuss the same topic that you do.
Twitter is a perfect example of these blogs, where short and compact information gets you followers. You can opt to buy Twitter followers, but Twitter spam can only get you so far. You will still need to provide news and information that your consumers will find useful in order to keep them. You will also find it useful to "hijack" the followers of other bloggers by participating in their discussions, either agreeing or disagreeing with their points of view, and then linking back to your own blog.
